The Case for Impeachment

The case for impeaching George W. Bush is clear and convincing and has been discussed at length elsewhere. Those discussions continue and reach more mainstream media outlets every day. The list of reasons to impeach grows longer with each passing week. We will not discuss the many reasons for impeachment here. Instead, we will highlight one reason that does not get much air.

The Bush administration has dishonored America and the values and principles on which she was founded. In the community of nations, America is not considered an honorable nation anymore. It does not live up to its international commitments nor the values on which it was founded and for which it was once held in high esteem. Its policies encourage and tolerate acts by government officials and employees that the international community, as well as U.S. law, considers criminal.

A formal repudiation of Bush's dishonorable behavior is a necessary step towards restoring America's honor. Our Constitution allows only one way to do that and that way is impeachment. It is not necessary for him to be convicted in the Senate in order to repudiate him, although that would be a stronger repudiation, and his impeachment is not enough to restore our nation's honor. However, it is a necessary step and the minimum that must be done. Our government needs to be on record in a formal and official way as understanding the criminality and culpability of this administration and roundly condemning it. Only then can America begin to repair its honor and credibility with the civilized world.
