No other president has responded in such a half-hearted and incomplete manner to serious threats to the United States, and then left the job unfinished, as this one has to the al Qaeda threat after the September 11th attacks.

There were more police officers guarding the GOP convention in New York City than the number of US ground troops sent to Afghanistan to hunt down al Qaeda and the Taliban. In February of 2002, there were about 8,000 US ground troops in Afghanistan. In August of 2004, there were more than 12,000 police officers guarding the GOP convention.

If we had a president who took the defense of his country seriously, he would have sent 160,000 troops to Afghanistan, instead of to Iraq. That kind of committment to defending the US would have enabled the effective sealing of the Afghani-Pakistan border and the systematic, valley-by-valley cleaning of the mountains to which al Qaeda and the Taliban fled and in which they continue to hide and operate to this day.

If we had a president truly committed to defending his country and defeating al Qaeda and who had led that kind of response, the war against al Qaeda might have been won and concluded years ago. Instead, this president gave, and continues to provide, safe haven to al Qaeda in those mountains. Our nation deserves a president who will protect us from those who want to destroy us, not one who will continue to provide our enemies with a safe haven for his own political benefit.

George W. Bush will never destroy al Qaeda because he needs al Qaeda to survive in order to generate the fear that he has been manipulating and exploiting so well for his own political purposes.

The defeat of al Qaeda first requires the departure of the incompetent George W. Bush from office.
